Develop research and critical thinking skills to find, evaluate, and ethically use information for a variety of personal, academic and professional needs. Explore the weaponization of information in an age of social media and the role of the individual as a content consumer versus creator within the context of one's worldview. IFS210: Research Without Borders: Info in a Global Society

Explore the emergence of a digitally-informed global community including the clash and cohesion of local, national and international systems of governance that relate to the flow and access of information. Examine emerging technologies to produce and distribute information across cultures that may mitigate or exacerbate conditions of social injustice. Prerequisites: None.

IFS213: Hacking and Open Source Culture

Explore the social, economic, cultural, technological, legal, and political implications of hacking and open source culture in both a historical and contemporary context. Rule-breaking, innovation, and creative use of programming/technology including the introduction to Python. No prior computer programming skills required. Prerequisites: None.

Field of Interest: Programs in the Culture and Society Field of Interest are focused on acquiring a deep understanding of humanity, society, and human expression. These programs foster critical and analytical thinking and create flexible problem solvers who are ready to tackle complex global issues.

Earning a BA or undergraduate minor in Information Science & eSociety will develop your ability to think critically about information and the ways that people use and influence technology. This may range from web design to information manipulation and propaganda, to the impact of social media on daily life. You will also develop your skills to communicate using a variety of digital and social media tools, including digital storytelling and social networks. Learn to create programs and solutions in online digital environments that are effective, inclusive and respectful of diverse people and groups.
